Mission Statement

To provide for the life safety, health, and welfare of students, faculty, visitors, and staff at Brevard Public Schools; through efficient, unbiased, professional administration and enforcement of the Florida Building Code, Referenced National Standards, and Federal Regulations.

All projects located on Board property require permitting; and NO PERMIT FEES are charged. Activities include code administration, plan review, permit issuance, project inspection, violation notices for non-compliance, and issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) or Certificate of Completion (COC). Eighty-three (83) schools and twenty-two (22) ancillary facilities are administered services by the Permitting and Code Compliance Office; under jurisdiction of the Brevard Public School Board.

Special Activities

The Board requires all modifications or alterations to school properties be approved prior to implementation. Any building or site improvement project funded or donated by a school or school-support organization shall be approved through the School Initiated Project (SIP) process. Donations of equipment, including playground equipment, shall be approved through the SIP process before acceptance by the school. All such donations shall become the sole property of the Board.

Additionally, the Building Official Chairs the Accessibility (ADA) Committee. Individuals needing special accommodations must submit a completed 'ADA Request Form" to the Building Official. The Committee hears cases monthly, on a case-by-case basis.

The 2017 Florida Building Code, 6th Edition

Provisions of this code became effective on December 31, 2017 and shall apply to the construction, alteration, relocation, enlargement, replacement, repair, equipment, use and occupancy, location, maintenance, removal and demolition of every building, sign, or structure located on School Board properties; or any appurtenances connected or attached to such buildings or structures (either electrically or electronically). All project permit applications, construction plans, and associated documents dated on or after January 1, 2018, shall be reviewed in accordance with the below listed codes and standards:

 2017 Florida Building Code (FBC), 6th Edition; including Referenced Standards listed in (Chapter 35);

 2014 National Electrical Code (NEC);

 2014 State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF);

 2017 Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC);
